Juni 1917 wurde das Institut urspr\u00fcnglich als Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut f\u00fcr Eisenforschung unter dem Dach der Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft zur F\u00f6rderung der Wissenschaften in D\u00fcsseldorf gegr\u00fcndet. Bis heute hat das Max-Planck-Institut f\u00fcr Eisenforschung (MPIE) seinen Sitz in dem 1935 fertiggestellten Institutsgeb\u00e4ude in D\u00fcsseldorf-D\u00fcsseltal. Von Beginn an war die interdisziplin\u00e4re Forschung mit einem hohen Praxisbezug kennzeichnend f\u00fcr die Arbeit des MPIE. Die Geschichte des Instituts reicht von der Gr\u00fcndungszeit, \u00fcber die Beteiligung an der R\u00fcstungsforschung im Zweiten Weltkrieg, bis hin zur Entwicklung zu einem Teil eines weltweiten Expertennetzwerkes.
